Theme
300 Shields introduces itself with an impressively ominous burst of music that leads you right into the warlike theme. The background surrounding the playing screen depicts a wheat field, blue skies and Spartan temples off in the distance. The welcome screen is punctured in many places with arrows, and this particular weapon appears repeatedly throughout the game.
The lower valued symbols are straight from the card deck and include the 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A. These symbols are colorful, ancient-styled letters and each has been pierced by an arrow. The medium-value symbols include a cluster of arrows flying at you, and a bloody double-edged sword atop a leather scabbard. There are two highest-value symbols: a long wooden ship with sails and oars, and a Spartan warrior pulling back on his bow and arrow. When you land on two or more of him, he becomes animated and shoots his arrow out of the frame.
Background sounds are basically limited to the movie-like soundtrack which only plays when the reels are actively spinning.
